An Austrian Chef at work in Singapore's Chinatown
“Welcome to Chinatown! The best and only one in Singapore!"
"Welcome to the last Wuerstelstand (German for sausage kiosk) ..before the Equator!"
A nice, warm and also funny welcome for tourists as well as locals strolling along
Chinatown in Singapore.
But for many visitors it somehow sounds strange too. Because these words are not coming out of a local Chinese, Malay or Indian's mouth, these and more catchphrases are hollered away by an ang moh (Westerner) while grilling his Austrian-style sausages.
Austrian Chef Erich Sollboeck opened for business in November 2004 in midst of Chinese food stalls.
This "crazy fellow” who he calls himself, is more than just a chef grilling sausages. Erich is a great entertainer as well. He will change his look according to different festivals.
Usually you can spot him in his white chef uniform with the tall white hat.
However during Christmas time he will look like Santa Claus shouting ‘Ho ho ho’.
Come Chinese New Year a bright-red silk Mandarin shirt and a Mandarin cap
with an attached pigtail will be his uniform.
And Valentines day? You wouldn't believe it, sweet Amour himself has served
the best sausages, pretzels and onion rolls.
But sorry this photo has been censored....................................??!!
No surprise that this fellow has been featured in many media around the globe
and he was even starring in various TV reports.
European news papers were showing pictures of Erich's Wuerstelstand and some
tourists visiting Singapore came literally searching for him in Chinatown.
On March 11 Erich together with Chinatown Business Association organized
The Grilling of the Longest German Sausage Ever in Singapore.
It was a Charity event and the target length was to grill and sell 88.8 meters of his
delicious sausage. No question that he exceeded it by a few more meters.
It was a wonderful afternoon where locals and Expats mingled and enjoyed sausage, Sauerkraut and the famous German Erdinger Beer.
Erich hopes to make his kiosk synonymous with Chinatown when tourists think of this little island in South-east Asia.
He says, laughing: “When the tourists return Europe and see a sign Wuerstelstand, they will remember Chinatown in Singapore for life! That’s my aim. They will remember they saw this crazy fellow in Chinatown!”
If you are curious to meet this guy and you’re up to tasting these famous
sausages now, don't worry it's easy to find him.
His Kiosk: "Erich's Wuerstelstand" is right in the centre of Chinatown.
Just follow the noise of the cowbell he is ringing when fellow Austrians
visit him at his Kiosk.
